Loyola is now smoke and vape free!

Smoke and Vape Free CampusInspired by the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, 91°µÍř is committed to promoting a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. On July 1, 2019, our campuses became smoke and vape free. Smoke-free policies are becoming a standard to foster a healthy collegiate environment, with the goal of reducing the health risks related to smoking and secondhand smoke for the campus community.

Speak Up About the Smoke-Free Policy

All faculty, staff, administrators, and students are encouraged to enforce the new policy through education, empathy, and awareness.

Tips for responding

The scripts below are intended as a guide to help the Loyola community become more comfortable in addressing the smoke-free campus policy with staff, students, faculty, and visitors in a polite, understanding, and cooperative manner.

You see someone smoking on Loyola property

Response: “Hello, my name is ______, and I am an (employee, student, faculty member) here at Loyola. I want to make you aware that we are a smoke-free campus, meaning that smoking is prohibited on our grounds. Loyola implemented this policy because we are committed to providing a healthy, safe, and productive work and learning environment for the entire campus community. We would appreciate it if you would not smoke while on our campus. Thank you for helping us keep our campus smoke-free.”

Someone asks, “Where am I allowed to smoke?”

Response: “Smoking is not allowed on any Loyola property. If you wish to smoke, you will need to leave campus property to do so.  Please be courteous to our neighbors and do not gather in front of neighborhood homes to smoke.”

Someone asks, “Am I allowed to smoke in my car?”

Response: “We ask that you respect our policy and not smoke while your car is on Loyola property.”

Someone asks, “Am I allowed to vape/use an e-cigarette?”

Response: “The policy states that all forms of smoking mediums, including electronic cigarettes, are not permitted to be used on campus property.”

Someone asks, “Why should I comply? I don’t agree with the policy.”

Response: “Caring for the whole person, and respect for others, are what guide us in establishing and maintaining a smoke-free campus. While this policy may be challenging for smokers at first, we hope that all members of the Loyola community will respect each other and the environment.”

Communicating the policy to vendors, contractors, and visitors

“I’d like to let you know that Loyola is a smoke-free campus. Smoking and vaping are not permitted on any campus property, grounds, or parking areas. Thank you for respecting our policy.  Please be courteous to our neighbors and do not gather in front of neighborhood homes to smoke.”

Someone asks, “Where do I go for support if I am interested in quitting?”

Response: “Student Support and Wellness Promotion (SSWP) has programs for students; Faculty, Staff and Administrators can contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-765-0770.  Another great resource for anyone is the Maryland QuitLine. All the contact information is on Loyola’s Smoke-free web page.”

If someone becomes angry or upset

Thank them for their time and continue on your way.
