Presented by the Black Student Association (BSA)
This year, the theme of Black History Month is "A Celebration of Black Unity." Loyola's Black Student Association will be hosting a series of events in appreciation of Black art, literature, and culture. There will be an emphasis placed on art, literature, and culture originating in Baltimore. Umoja, McGuire Hall, 8 - 11 p.m.
UMOJA serves as our annual celebration of the culture, traditions, and history of
Black
Americans in the United States. As the largest event that the Black Student Association
has
to offer, UMOJA will be the culminating event for this year’s Black History Month
festivities. The word “umoja” comes from the Swahili language and is one of the seven
key
principles within the seven-day celebration of Kwanzaa. Meaning Unity, Umoja represents
and promotes the success of students and improved life outcomes through a curriculum
based on the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas. In the spirit of
Unity,
the Black Student Association hopes to provide a safe, inclusive space where Loyola
students can partake in the education and celebration of Black culture. UMOJA will
bring
together students, faculty, and peers from other universities to feature performances
through diverse mediums such as song, dance, and art. UMOJA is set to highlight the
various facets of the Black experience and uplift the Black communities on this campus.
